Fairfields estate is cleaner, safer, greener

07 October 2009

Residents in Market Drayton have scored a first for the county as part of a team effort with a leading social landlord to enhance their environment.

The Fairfields Estate, in Market Drayton, has been awarded Shropshire’s first Cleaner, Safer, Greener kitemark by campaign group, Keep Britain Tidy.

Hard work by residents and social landlord, Meres & Mosses Housing Association, has seen improvements to the area as well as greater opportunities to socialise for all who live there.

The initiative has seen the building of planters, which were then filled with flowers and bulbs, as well as general tidying of the streets – all completed by volunteers.

Residents held clean-up days, organised fun days and formed the Fairfields in Action residents group, all with the support of Meres & Mosses Housing Association.

Consultations were held to get the process underway, with all residents given the opportunity to have their say on what would make Fairfields cleaner, safer and greener, ensuring that any steps taken would directly improve quality of life on the estate.

Sheila Standley, Resident Involvement Officer for Meres & Mosses Housing Association, said: “We are very proud of them as this is the first award of this kind which has been achieved in Shropshire, showing that they have made a real difference to where they live.

“The partnership approach has been important to Meres & Mosses Housing Association since it was formed and this is one of the many tangible results of that.”

Meres & Mosses Housing Association is now inviting interest from other areas where it has properties in which residents are keen to join the initiative and make their area the next Cleaner, Safer, Greener zone.
