Tarca Helps With Schools Projects

Environmental and educational projects across North Shropshire primary schools have received £16,000 of support from Meres and Mosses Housing Association.

The money came from the social landlord’s Community Development Fund, with the projects chosen by members of the tenants’ group, the Towns and Rural Communities Association (TARCA).

TARCA was asked to decide how the money could be best used and decided to focus on primary schools, encouraging them to devise schemes to promote awareness of the environment.

A total of 24 projects were submitted for funding and included plans to develop wildlife areas, erect greenhouses to grow vegetables and build a bridge to aid the route of a school ‘walking bus’.

Jennie Barfoot, Managing Director of Meres and Mosses Housing Association, explained: “We thought the best people to research how the Community Development Fund money should be spent were the tenants, so we approached TARCA to look at the options. We’re delighted with the approach they took and the fact that the fund has been put to such good use.

“Primary schools are at the very heart of their communities and if we can combine benefiting the schools with the children learning about their environment, that’s about the best outcome we could have envisaged.”
