Digging in for affordable homes
04 October 2007
The first sod has been cut on an exciting new development of affordable and environmentally-friendly homes on the outskirts of Church Stretton.
The 26 two, three and four bedroom homes at Street Meadow are being built by SJ Construction as part of a programme of developments by South Shropshire Housing Association (SSHA), the area’s largest not-for-profit landlord, to provide high quality affordable homes for people with a strong local connection.
Paul Sutton, Managing Director of South Shropshire Housing Association, said: “There is currently a shortage of affordable housing in the district and supply is currently outstripping demand.
“South Shropshire Housing Association’s remit is to champion the provision of affordable rented and shared ownership properties in locations where land is available and there is a justified need to build quality affordable homes for local people.”
The Street Meadow development is the culmination of months of consultation with planners, the town council and local residents to ensure the homes not only meet today’s requirements but are sustainable for future generation.
The properties were deliberately orientated to ensure they maximise passive solar energy by making the best use of the sun’s heat and light. A‘Homezone’ style road layout will also ensure a pedestrian –friendly environment.
Homezone, often used in Europe, combines visual and physical design features to slow traffic and to encourage pedestrians to use the area.
A children’s plan area, planned for the northern section of the site, will benefit children and families from nearby Swains Meadow as well as from Street Meadow.
The first new residents and tenants will be expected to move in at end of 2008. A total of 15 homes will be for rent and 11 for shared ownership with buyers required to work in the area or to have other strong local connections.
